Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn located in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. After her father died in the role of a carnival barker at the age of a young girl and she was forced to keep the family going by working as a cleaner and a server. Ruth went to school and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. However, she was only in school for a couple of years, then taking a break to pursue her acting career. The path she chose to take turned out to be fraught with difficulties and In New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills for a magazine about crime However, the stage was not a match for her. Her next job was as a "hat check" lady at a club before she gave up and returned to Boston. She worked as an usherette in the mornings and appeared at the New England Repertory Company by the evening. This was her first permanent acting gig. In addition, she was a drama student and ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
